Samantha Gaul

Samantha Gaul is a permanent member of the ensemble at Oper Leipzig, where she regularly appears in roles such as Pamina (The Magic Flute), Musetta (La Bohème), Sophie (Der Rosenkavalier), Gretel (Hänsel and Gretel), Ännchen (Der Freischütz), Nannetta (Falstaff), and Despina (Così fan tutte). She received particular acclaim for the role of L’Inconnue in the world premiere of Coming Up For Air.

In the 2026/27 season, she makes her debut as Lauretta and Suor Genovieffa (Il Trittico) and can be seen as Susanna in a new production of Le Nozze di Figaro at Oper Leipzig.

A close artistic colloboration connects Samantha Gaul with the Budapest Festival Orchestra under Iván Fischer, with whom she makes her debut at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden in the role of Pamina, returning to the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall in Budapest as well as the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza.

On the concert stage, she will make her debut with the MDR Symphony Orchestra in Poulenc’s Gloria at the Gewandhaus Leipzig, and will join the Bochum Symphony Orchestra for Haydn’s Die Jahreszeiten at the Musikforum Ruhr.

Together with the Thomanerchor Leipzig under Andreas Reize, she will open the Bachfest 2027 with Mozart’s Mass in C minor.

Numerous guest engagements have taken Samantha Gaul to prestigious venues, including the Komische Oper Berlin (Nannetta, Gretel), the NCPA Beijing (Adele), Theater Basel (Augusta Leigh), Staatstheater Darmstadt (Flora, Linfea), Konzerttheater Bern (Musetta), as well as the Oper Frankfurt and the Opéra National de Montpellier (Naiad). At the Staatstheater Augsburg, she excelled in roles such as Sophie Scholl (Die weiße Rose), the title role in Hartmann’s Simplicius Simplicissimus, Serpetta (La finta giardiniera), and Adina (L’elisir d’amore).

She has also appeared at the Munich Biennale for Contemporary Music Theatre, the Schwetzingen SWR Festival, the Rheingau Musik Festival, the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, the Philharmonie Berlin, the Kulturpalast Dresden, Villa Wahnfried in Bayreuth, the Philharmonie Köln, and the Liederhalle Stuttgart.

A passionate concert and lieder singer, Samantha Gaul was thrilled to make her debut at the Schubertiade Hohenems in spring 2022 with pianist Kit Armstrong, where they premiered songs set to poems by Ulla Hahn. She also made her debut at the Philharmonie Luxembourg with Mahler’s 4th Symphony under Carlo Rizzari.

From 2018 to 2022, Samantha Gaul was a permanent ensemble member at Theater Freiburg, where she sang key roles of her repertoire. She earned special recognition for her portrayal of the title role in the German premiere of Mark-Anthony Turnage’s Coraline, as well as for the title role in Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen, which she also recorded for a CD production with NAXOS and SWR.

In 2018, Samantha Gaul was nominated as Young Artist of the Year by Opernwelt magazine.
